The Truth About "Low Budget” Movies
I was just thinking about movie budgets and a pet peeve popped into my head about low budget indies.
When someone says they made a movie for 20 grand... they’re lying!
Sure, they may have shelled out the money, but how many crew members worked for free? I’ve done my share of free work; luckily for me, not that much.
There should be a disclosure in these budgets that puts a value on the ”free” hours contributed by the crew. When I encounter a producer who brags about how he or she made their movie for hardly any money, I always…..ALWAYS….call them out for not acknowledging the work that many of the crew members did for no money.
They should at least give some value for their work, because it has great value. I have no problem with people who feel that by working on a movie for free they’ll get contacts and knowledge, which is true.
My problem is that the producers then brag about how little money they spent to make the movie. It’s totally bogus.
